Auf Umwegen zurück nach Hamburg
Nach 10 erfüllten Berufsjahren als Diakon in Westfalen und je einem kurzen Abstecher nach Speyer und Schleswig nehme ich dann die Stelle eines Heimleiters im Seemannsheim an und wechsele am 26. Januar 1970 nach Hamburg an den Krayenkamp

Otto Brunschede wird Ende März 1970 in den Ruhestand gehen und kann mich in den gut zwei Monaten einarbeiten. Am 26. Januar 1970 reise ich dann also im kernigen Alter von 35 Jahren an und bewohne zunächst das Gästezimmer 227 im zweiten Stock des Seemannsheimes. Ich schaue Brunschede, der den Job des Hausvaters schon seit 1951 macht, über die Schulter.
Das Seemannsheim steht in der Straße Krayenkamp im Schatten des großen Hamburger „Michel“ inmitten der City, tausend Schritte von St. Pauli entfernt.

Der von mir jetzt erwählte Arbeitsbereich ist etwas ganz Neues für mich. Ich fühle mich plötzlich als Hotelmanager mit viel Verwaltungskleinkram im Alltagstrott; denn im Seemannsheim wird alle Verwaltungsorganisation mit Buchhaltung inklusive Lohnbuchhaltung an Ort und Stelle selbst erledigt.

Neben dem Seemannsheim rauscht die Ost-West-Straße (später in Ludwig-Erhard-Straße umbenannt), eine der belebtesten Verkehrsadern Hamburgs, vorbei. Die Feuerwache befindet sich in der Nähe: Tag und Nacht hören wir die schrillen Martinshörner von Polizei und Feuerwehr in Richtung St. Pauli. Das 1959 erbaute Haus hängt zu der Zeit mit einer Ecke über einer gigantischen, 30 m tiefen, Baugrube der City-S-Bahn. Die Straße Krayenkamp ist eine Großbaustelle. Ein Stück des Kellers ist weggerissen. Ganz tief unten in der Grube sieht man die Arbeiter werken.

Bei meinem Beginn als Heimleiter im Seemannsheim am Krayenkamp in Hamburg fand ich 1970 diese Großbaustelle mit dem Neubau der City-S-Bahn vor.
Die Bauarbeiten gehen vom frühen Morgen bis in den späten Abend zügig voran. Die schlimmsten Rammarbeiten sind aber schon vor unserem Einzug beendet. Noch jahrelang müssen wir mit der Baustelle leben. Am nervigsten sind die Ramm- und Rüttelarbeiten nach Zuschütten des Tunnelschachtes. Nach Jahren Bauzeit spüren wir eines Nachts, wie der erste Zug unter uns hinwegrattert. Später wird alle paar Minuten eine Bahn nach der anderen mit unüberhörbaren Vibrationen unter uns hinwegbrausen.
